Araria Boils with Tension on Trails of Giriraj Singh’s Saffron Card in Bihar

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, October 24: Union Minister Giriraj Singh wrapped up his ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’ in Bihar. His yatra saw communal heat in Araria over remarks made by the local MP.

The Union Minister took out the ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’ in parts of Bihar with long history of communal discords. Singh set out on the yatra from Bhagalpur.

Crossing the river Ganga, his yatra entered the ‘Seemanchal’ parts of Bihar. Singh led his yatra in Araria, Purnia, and Kishanganj. Districts of Bihar near the borders with Bangladesh and Nepal are known as ‘Seemanchal’.

Local reports said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Araria Pradeep Kumar Singh purportedly gave the slogan of ‘Araria me rehna hai to Hindu banana hoga (To stay in Araria, you will have to become Hindu)’.

In the aftermath of the remark of the BJP MP, communally surcharged crowd indulged in acts of arsons in Araria. The crowd burnt posters of the ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’. They also burnt tyres.

Union Minister accused former deputy chief minister of Bihar and leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav for inciting the crowd for violence in Araria. “Our yatra in Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnia, Araria and Kishanganj was completed with peace and harmony. But Tejashwi Yadav deliberately instigated riots in Araria. This is the result of his destructive politics, which everyone can see now,” said Giriraj Singh in a post on X.

Yadav had accused the BJP MP of stoking communal tension with his “inflammatory statement”. Yadav claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar provided additional security to the BJP MP.

The police administration prevailed over the communally surcharged crowd in Araria with proactive deployment of forces, said local reports. Araria has a history of communal riots.

Union Minister’s ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’ was staged amid Bihar bracing for the Assembly elections. Districts covered in the ‘Hindu Swabhiman Yatra’ have sizable number of Assembly constituencies where politics of polarisation is mostly seen on the ground.

The BJP had won sizable number of Assembly seats in such communally sensitive districts after AIMIM of Asaduddin Owaisi fielded a large number of candidates in the 2020 state polls.

The BJP also reaped electoral dividends in the communally sensitive districts in the Lok Sabha elections this year. The BJP won Lok Sabha seats such as Araria which has a large Muslim vote base.
