“Actors were sent to the hospital every day during filming of 300. You’d be doing a fight, you turn around, there’s a guy down there, a spear went in his eye,” Butler told ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’ co-star O’Shea Jackson Jr. The two actors recorded a conversation for People’s ‘Comparing Notes’.

During the chat, Butler also recalled him almost drowning even while he had been trained to surf. He told his co-star that he had almost been “drowned by a huge set of waves”. Butler was recalling his mishap while filming for ‘Chasing Mavericks’, which was released in 2012.
“I was almost drowned despite learning how to surf for the movie,” the People quoted the actor saying during the chat. He said that “I thought I was done”.
“They had to take me out, take me to hospital, put me out, give me the defibrillator. I mean, it was intense,” the actor 55-year-old reminisced while sharing several other stunts which went wrong in his acting career. But Butler maintained that he will not quit stunts.
The 2006 historical action epic 300 was directed and co-written by Zack Snyder. In a review of the film 300, Slate said that it depicted the “Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., where, according to classical history and legend, the Spartan king Leonidas led a force of only 300 men against a Persian enemy numbering in the hundreds of thousands”.
Frank Miller and Lynn Varley had written a novel on the epic battle. “I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital… You’d be doing a fight, you turn around… there’s a guy over there who just fell, broke his ankle. I mean, it was insane,” Butler told O’Shea Jackson Jr.
He, however, himself wasn’t injured during the filming of 300. Butler also recalled almost shooting co-star Jolie in the face on the set for the making of the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). The People quoted Butler also recalling during the chat that he had mishaps with co-star Hilary Swank with whom he worked in the film ‘P.S. I Love You’, which was released in 2007.
“I’ve scarred Swank on the head. I almost shot Jolie in the face,” said Butler in the char, adding: “I was coming down, hanging upside down. I had to fire a gun, but I had no control over where this thing went. So, I was just firing and I just missed it.”
The actor also stated that he had been “shot by bullets, casings, explosions. A whole camera rig once fell down on Hilary Swank and I”.
Butler also recalled the horror when Pierce Brosnan while filming for James Bond “drove me straight into a wall. And this thing was supposed to stop as he was supposed to slam the brakes. We hit a wall on a rooftop, 3-foot-high wall, full speed, in a Range Rover.”
