Geraldine Viswanathan’s Hollywood Rise: From Aussie Star to Marvel’s Thunderbolts

New Delhi, April 29, 2025: Geraldine Viswanathan has rapidly ascended in Hollywood. Born on June 20, 1995, in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, the young star with Indian roots is establishing herself as a versatile actress across comedy, drama, and animation.

Viswanathan has caught worldwide attention for her upcoming role in Marvel’s Thunderbolts, set to release on May 2, 2025. The film has turned spotlight on the young actress.

Viswanathan has a multicultural heritage. She has an Indian Tamil father. Her mother is Swiss-German. Both enriched her unique perspective and presence in the entertainment industry, said OutLoud in a profile of the young actress.

She joins a star-studded cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, and Florence Pugh. Viswanathan replaces Ayo Edebiri in the role of Mel, speculated to be the MCU’s version of the character Songbird.

At the age of four, she showed her passion for performance, with her first appearance in a Kodak commercial. She honed her craft at the Hunter School of the Performing Arts in Newcastle.

Reports said that Viswanathan furthered her experience in stand-up and sketch comedy in Sydney. Her breakout role came in 2018 with the comedy film Blockers, where her portrayal of Kayla garnered critical acclaim.

Refinery29 highlighted her as the film’s standout star, noting her refreshing on-screen presence.

Demonstrating her range, Viswanathan took on the lead role in Hala (2019). She depicted a a Muslim teenager grappling with cultural identity. The film has been hailed as a coming-of-age drama by reports.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It was acquired by Apple as its first narrative feature. In the same year, she starred in Bad Education alongside Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney.

She portrayed Rachel Bhargava, a student journalist uncovering a school embezzlement scandal. “Her performance received critical acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival,” said American Kahani in a report.

Viswanathan showcased her comedic talents in the TBS anthology series Miracle Workers (2019–2023). She acted alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi. She also ventured into voice acting with the animated film Rumble (2021), voicing the character Winnie.

Discussing the role, she shared her excitement with Backstage about representing “little brown girls” in animation and the challenges of conveying emotion through voice alone.

In 2024, Viswanathan starred in Drive-Away Dolls, a queer road-trip comedy directed by Ethan Coen, marking his first solo directorial venture, added American Kahani. She also appeared in The Beanie Bubble, a film exploring the 1990s Beanie Babies craze.

Viswanathan’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. She was named to The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Next Gen Talent’ list in 2018 and received the Rising Star Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019.
