MUMBAI, June 15, 2025 — Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), one of India’s leading defence shipyards, has announced plans to establish new shipbuilding facilities on both the East and West Coasts of India. The announcement is aimed at company’s plan to significantly expand its production capacity.
This strategic by move GRSE aligns with the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and its goal to meet growing domestic and international demand for naval and commercial vessels.
An official statement from GRSE, as reported on its website (www.grse.in), confirmed the expansion plans: “In line with our commitment to ‘Make in India – Make for World,’ GRSE is identifying strategic locations on both coasts to set up new shipbuilding facilities. This expansion will enhance our capability to deliver advanced naval platforms and commercial vessels, ensuring timely execution of orders and meeting the evolving needs of our clients.”
The GRSE stock has in the past one month has given explosive returns, almost doubling to over ₹3100 a share now. The stock has been the best performer among the shipbuilding listed companies in share price movement.
The decision to establish facilities on both coasts is seen as a response to the increasing demand for indigenous shipbuilding, particularly in the defence sector. GRSE’s Wikipedia page, updated on May 28, 2025, notes the company’s recent contract for four multi-purpose vessels (MPVs) to transport windmill blades, valued at $54 million, signed with a German entity, Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei. This deal underscores GRSE’s growing international footprint and its readiness to scale operations.
On X. @DefenceAnalyst_2025 commented, “GRSE’s expansion to both coasts is a game-changer for India’s shipbuilding industry. It will not only boost domestic capacity but also position GRSE as a key player in global markets, especially with the focus on indigenous defence manufacturing.”
GRSE’s focus on both commercial and defence sectors has come in spotlight among the investors, who claim that it will give the company a competitive edge. A number of PSU shipbuilding companies are also listed in the stock market.
The expansion comes at a time when GRSE is already achieving high indigenous content in its projects. The company’s website proudly states, “Taking the Government’s Make in India Initiative forward, the ASW Corvettes and LCUs delivered by GRSE over the last few years had an indigenous content of over 90%, a major step towards achieving self-reliance in state-of-the-art warship design and construction.”
Industry analysts suggest that the new facilities will also address logistical challenges, reducing transit times for vessels and improving operational efficiency. “Having shipbuilding capabilities on both coasts will optimize supply chains and enhance GRSE’s ability to respond to urgent defence requirements,” noted @ShipbuildingInsights on X.
