New Delhi, February 11: Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb threw a party with a difference yesterday. This was to celebrate the defeat of Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi Assembly seat.
Deb threw the gala party not for the BJP workers. His special invitees were a select army of PAs of the MPs in New Delhi constituency.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trounced the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Assembly elections in Delhi. The BJP won a total of 48 Assembly seats. The AAP came distant second, winning 22 Assembly seats.
The BJP had put in place a special plan to defeat Kejriwal, the national convenor of the AAP. Kejriwal had been undefeated from the New Delhi Assembly seat in last three Assembly elections.
“The personal assistants of the MPs, of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, were invited for the gala party. They were fêted for efforts to defeat Kejriwal,” said a source close to former Chief Minister of Tripura.
The PAs of the MPs had been assigned a special task to work with the informal workers attached to the bungalows and elsewhere to vote for the BJP nominee Parvesh Verma. “They had the task to convince washermen, vegetable vendors, barbers, domestic workers, drivers, and others to vote for Verma and defeat Kejriwal,” informed the source.
Verma defeated Kejriwal with a margin of more than 4,000 votes. The AAP in the run up to the elections had claimed that a large number of new voters were added in the electoral roll with the addresses of the electorate being the bungalows of the MPs.
There are 545 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) enjoys majority in both houses of parliament.
After losing the elections, the AAP has reiterated its charge against alleged electoral roll manipulation. Incidentally, the New Delhi Assembly seat is one of the smallest constituencies in the national capital.
The casual workers reside in a number of Jhuggis abutting the New Delhi areas. The MPs and their associates make a significant population in the constituency.
The NDA constituents had also marshalled their strength while canvassing in the Delhi Assembly elections. Even Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu campaigned in Delhi.
“The PAs of the MPs toiled hard in the jhuggi clusters. They played a key role in the defeat of Kejriwal. They also canvassed in colonies of the government colonies,” the source informed.
