Trump Refuses to Sign G7 Leaders Joint Statement while Focus Stays on Iran

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, June 17, 2025 – At the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in the Canadian Rockies, leaders from the world’s major economies issued a draft joint statement declaring that Iran “must never obtain nuclear weapons” while affirming Israel’s “right to self-defence,” according to a report by The Globe and Mail. The statement, which emerged amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, underscored the G7’s unified concern over Iran’s nuclear program but was notably impacted by US President Donald Trump’s decision to withhold his signature and depart the summit early for an urgent security meeting in Washington.

The draft statement, as reported by Reuters and cited by The Globe and Mail, reflects a collective resolve among G7 nations—Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan—to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the group’s “absolute clarity” on the issue, stating, “We do not want to see (Iran’s nuclear program),” during a press interaction at the summit. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, the summit host, highlighted the critical timing of the discussions, noting that the meeting occurred at “one of those turning points in history” due to the intensifying Middle East conflict.

However, the summit was overshadowed by Trump’s abrupt exit on Monday night, a day earlier than planned, as reported by The Star. The White House announced that Trump’s departure was prompted by the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, with the president citing the need to monitor developments in the Middle East. “Because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on X. Trump’s early departure meant he skipped planned bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as discussions on global trade and the war in Ukraine.

Trump’s decision not to sign the draft G7 statement calling for de-escalation between Israel and Iran created a divide among the leaders, according to The Star. A US official told the outlet that Trump believed his public statements on the conflict were sufficient, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring “Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.”

The Canadian Press noted that Trump’s early exit echoed his behavior at the 2018 G7 summit in Quebec, where he also left prematurely and refused to endorse the joint communique. This time, Carney opted to forgo a traditional comprehensive communique to avoid potential diplomatic fallout, focusing instead on chair summaries. French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to The Star, expressed hope for a ceasefire, noting that an offer had been made for the US to engage with Iran to resume diplomatic talks.
