London, February 11: A Manchester bound flight made an emergency landing in Athens after the pilot collapsed mid-air. The easyJet flight U2 2252 was headed for Manchester from Hurghada, Egypt.
“The easyJet flight (Airbus A320neo registered G-UZEE) made an emergency landing in Athens on February 8 after the captain suffered a medical emergency,” said Aviation24 in a report. It added that the “co-pilot safely diverted the aircraft”. Emergency services attended to the plane on landing in Athens.
A passenger told The Manchester Evening News that it took them two hours to realise that something was amiss. The passenger told the daily that a man had collapsed when the cabin crew rushed to the front of the plane.
Afterwards, the cabin crew screamed, asking if anyone is medically trained, the passenger told the daily. “A few passengers got up and assisted the cabin crew,” he added.
The passengers had been in the flight for two hours when they realised something was wrong. The people took to the social media platforms to state that this was the second incident in a week of a pilot collapsing mid-air.
The passengers reportedly were scared with the incident. It came close on heels of a military helicopter Black Hawk crashing into a passenger American airline in Washington D.C. last month, killing 67 people.
“The incident highlights pilot health monitoring and emergency preparedness,” said Aviation24, adding that the needs is for “reinforcing aviation safety measures to handle rare but critical situations”.
The airline issued a statement after the emergency landing in Athens, Greece. “EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2252 from Hurghada to Manchester on 8 February was diverted to Athens due to the captain requiring medical assistance,” said the airline in a media statement.
It also stated that the “first officer performed a routine landing in accordance with standard operating procedures”. “The aircraft was met by paramedics on arrival in Athens,” added the airline.
The passengers in the flight said that they had been scared. “Passengers started to panic after the cabin crew told them in a call that the captain was seeking medical attention after falling unwell,” Manchester Evening News said in a report.
The UK-based daily also quoted passengers, saying that they had a “rough and scary” landing. “We started to panic. I got upset once I felt how rocky and rough the landing was,” the daily quoted a passenger saying.
