New Delhi, November 16: In a heart-wrenching incident, 10 newborn babies were reported to have died after an incident of fire in the NICU of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Massive fire broke out after a short-circuit in the NICU in the medical college in Jhansi.

IANS in a report said that “a massive fire broke out in the NICU of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College, claiming the lives of 10 newborns”. The report said that 40 children were rescued after the fire spread in the pediatric ward (SNCU).

Local reports said that six fire brigade vehicles were rushed to tame the fire. “As many as 40 children were rescued,” eyewitness accounts said.

Piyush Rai, a journalist, posted a small clip of inconsolable parents of deceased newborns after the incident. “Tragedy struck the government-run medical College in Jhansi UP. In a heart wrenching incident, at least 10 newborns were charred to death after the NICU caught fire at around 10:30 in the night,” Rai said in his post on X.

He stated that “inconsolable parents break down in front of media persons outside hospital”. Several videos of the incidents have gone viral on the social media platforms, showing parents running inside the ward to save the children.

“A fire broke out at a medical college, leading to the tragic death of around 10 newborns. Parents were seen running with their infants in their arms, desperate to save them,” said one user who posted several videos of the incident on X.

About five months ago, a similar fire incident in Delhi private clinic had killed seven newborn children after an alleged short-circuit caused fire in the NICU. “At least seven newborn babies were killed after a massive fire broke out at New Born Baby Care hospital in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar,” HT reported on May 26 this year.

Within hours of the New Born Baby Care hospital incident in Vivek Vihar in Delhi videos had surfaced, showing parents rushing into the ward to save the newborn children. “As many as 12 babies were rescued, out of which six died, while one died before the fire call was made,” HT had quoted officials saying after the New Born Baby Care hospital incident in May this year.
