By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, July 31: The global face of the Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, has been killed in an ‘unknown attack’ in Tehran. The Hamas declared that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in an attack by “Israel in Tehran”.

The Hamas made the announcement in its Telegram channel. The Islamic Republic Guard of Iran also stated that “Haniyeh has been assassinated”.

“Hamas announced that its leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed following Israeli raid targeting his residence in Tehran,” said a newsbreak by Anadolu English.

An open-source intelligence network, OSINT-defender, also confirmed the death of the top Hamas leader. “The Political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards have been Killed, after their residence in the Iranian Capital of Tehran was Targeted in an unknown attack,” said OSINT-Defender in a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

Yashal Ali, a journalist covering the region, wrote in The Reset that “Haniyeh was visiting Tehran to meet with the Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Khamenei)”.  Haniyeh was also slated to attend the swearing-in of the new president of Iran, added Ali in an update for The Reset.

Ali quoted the local Iranian media breaking the news of the killing of Haniyeh. The Hamas leader had emerged the ruler of Gaza after the 2006 election.

Haniyeh regularly visited Iran to meet the supreme leader of the Islamic nation. The political leadership of the Hamas had shifted its base to Qatar. The October attack by the Hamas on Israel and the subsequent hostage taking by the group continue to invite the Israeli bombings in Gaza.

Israel has not yet reacted on the killing of Haniyeh. Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s president while on a visit to a border area, had also died after his helicopter crashed in the hilly terrains.

The Hamas still hold a large number of the hostages, which include Israeli and citizens of several other countries. Qatar had been brokering a negotiation with Israel and the Hamas for a hostage swap deal.

Israel has initially released a number of prisoners in exchange of the hostages held by the Hamas. But Israel is now expanding its target in bombing and counter attacks within Gaza and also in areas held by Hezbollah. Israel is also carrying out punitive actions against the Houthis in Yemen.
