Ex-Modi Aide AK Sharma Faces Backlash over Power Outages in Uttar Pradesh

By TRH Political Desk

NEW DELHI, July 26, 2025 — A few years ago, AK Sharma, former official of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), hogged media limelight and fuelled media speculations. Sharma shined as key actor in “conspiracy” plots to clip political wins of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Media reported that Sharma was sent to Lucknow on a special mission.

While the political plot soon began gathering dust with Adityanath leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory in the 2022 Assembly elections, Sharma became Power Minister in the UP Cabinet. In a span of three years, Sharma is now almost a fodder to creative brains behind meme fest and jokes. On his watch, allegations fly thick and fast that UP has returned to days of long hours of power cuts.

With UP holding investment roadshows in several cities and making bid to hard sell its plan to emerge India’s flagbearer of economic transformation, claims of power outages are going against the script. The fall guy appears to by Sharma, who enjoyed the description of a key aide of Modi.

With Sharma struggling to show his grip on administration, the UP Chief Minister stepped in and cracked whip on officials of power department to get their acts together and address claims of long hours of power cuts. Ironically, Sharma was described by national media as a special pointsman of Modi to help Yogi in improving the state administration efficiency.

“UP CM Yogi cracks the whip on Power Dept: No excuses for outages or overbilling,” the CM office headlined a media statement issued after Adityanath held a review meeting on Friday. It further stated in a sub-headline: “No shortage of funds, electricity, or resources; fix the system or face action: Chief Minister.”

The UP Chief Minister asserted in the meeting that “electricity is the lifeline of public trust, not just a government service.”

“During a high-level review meeting of the Power Department on Friday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath underscored that the state’s power system is no longer just a technical or administrative matter—it is a symbol of public trust and a measure of the government’s responsiveness to citizens’ needs,” added the media statement issued by the UP CMO.

He issued a stern warning that tripping, overbilling, and unwarranted power cuts will not be tolerated under any circumstances, and directed officials to implement urgent improvements without delay.
