‘Even a Poor Farmer Can Teach Him Dignity’: Deve Gowda on Trump

By TRH Political Desk

NEW DELHI, August 1, 2025 — Former Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha Member H.D. Deve Gowda has strongly criticized US President Donald J. Trump for his recent remarks on the Indian economy, calling them “baseless and ill-tempered,” and suggesting that “even a small trader and a poor farmer in India can teach many lessons to Mr. Trump.”

In a formal statement released today, Deve Gowda expressed surprise and disappointment at Trump’s tone, calling him “volatile, uncivil, and irresponsible.” The former PM noted that no other modern head of state has shown such disregard for international norms of diplomacy.

“Mr. Trump has not just behaved badly with India, but with every other country across the world,” the statement reads. The veteran parliamentarian further stated that “there is something fundamentally wrong with him which reason, diplomacy or statecraft cannot diagnose and address.”

Deve Gowda also extended strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, commending the government for resisting Trump’s pressure tactics and refusing to compromise on India’s national interests. “I am very happy and proud that India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not compromised our national interest. It has not blinked to Mr. Trump’s bullying and has shown that it will never be dictated by threat,” he said.

He praised the Modi government’s proactive efforts to safeguard the Indian agriculture sector and small and medium businesses, which support over half the country’s population, calling it a “national resurgence of an unprecedented scale.”

In a sharp rebuke to domestic political rivals, Deve Gowda warned certain opposition leaders who he said were “rejoicing” over Trump’s critical statements about India’s economy. “I can understand their frustration but they should not harm themselves and their parties, and end up very soon in the dustbin of history alongside Mr. Trump,” he wrote.

Defending India’s economic performance, Deve Gowda underlined that India remains the fastest growing economy and the fifth largest in the world, dismissing Trump’s suggestion that the Indian economy is “dead” as either “blind or ill-informed.”

He called on political leaders and the public to treat such comments with caution, and to remain confident in India’s resilience and sovereign capabilities. Deve Gowda and Modi have shown mutual admirations for each other in recent years. His political outfit, the Janata Dal (Secular) is also an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka.
