New Delhi, August 19: Former vice-chairman of the Niti Aayog, Rajiv Kumar, has called upon West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to offer ‘Prayashchit’ in the wake of the rape-murder of a junior doctor in RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
“Despite all that has passed Mamata Banerjee for whom I have the highest respect, must now offer penance or Prayashchit on behalf of the entire political leadership,” suggested Kumar in a long post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
The former vice chairman of the Niti Aayog also suggested that Raksha Bandhan be celebrated as ‘Satyagraha’. He will be offering his ‘Satyagraha’ at the Raj Ghat next week.

Kumar suggested that the West Bengal chief minister could “start with her public apology to the Doctor’s parents and followed by a week-long Satyagraha with all her women MPs and MLAs at the Gandhi Statue in Kolkata”. Reports claimed that the parents of the doctor victim, a second-year PG student at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, have expressed lack of faith in Banerjee in the aftermath of the rape-murder of their daughter.
“I hope she concurs with my conviction that this will only raise her stature in the eyes of not only her followers but also her political opponents. Our countrymen and countrywomen are most forgiving if they see true contrition and prayashchit,” added Kumar.

Doctors across the country are holding protests against the rape-murder of 31-year-old junior doctor. The brutality of the violence has brought the medical fraternity on the street, seeking justice, while also raising demand for a central law for their safety at workplaces.
“All Chief Ministers in whose states such events (incidents) have recently taken place should also sit on Satyagraha and offer prayashchit on behalf of their people. This is the time for us to do this,” added the former vice-chairman of the Niti Aayog.

Close on the heels of the Kolkata horror, a teenaged girl was gangraped in a bus in Dehradun. Reports said that only two states so far have implemented the norms enshrined in the wake of the Nirbhaya case of Delhi when a young girl was gangraped in a moving bus in the national capital.
“I have decided to be at Rajghat on next Friday 23rd at 11.00 am to sit in meditation and in Satyagraha to cleanse my soul and my attention from the lingering shame that I feel as an Indian because of what we do to our daughters, sisters and mothers,” added Kumar.
