Newly released congressional files show Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until a day before the disgraced financier’s 2019 arrest — including seeking guidance on a relationship involving the daughter of a senior Chinese Communist Party official.

New Delhi, November 18, 2025 — Former Harvard University president and U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has announced he is stepping back from all public commitments after a cache of emails detailing his extensive communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to light.
“I am deeply ashamed of my actions and recognize the pain they have caused. I take full responsibility for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Mr. Epstein,” Summers said in a statement to The Harvard Crimson.
The emails — released by Congress last week as part of the escalating push to declassify the Epstein files — show Summers remained in contact with Epstein until July 5, 2019, just one day before Epstein’s arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges.
Screenshots shared by BBC contributor Jon Schwarz and analysts on X reveal deeply personal exchanges in which Summers sought Epstein’s advice about navigating a relationship with a young Chinese economist — whose father is described as a senior Chinese Communist Party official and founding president of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
The messages show Summers venting about cancelled plans, perceived romantic rivals, and his efforts to flatter the woman’s influential father. In one exchange, Summers forwarded a note from her to Epstein moments after receiving it, explaining how he had “sent a comment in meeting with her father flattering him and saying other China officials had flattered him as well.”
Analysts say the correspondence underscores the depth of Summers’ reliance on Epstein — long after Epstein’s first conviction and despite widespread warnings in academic and political circles.
The release of these communications comes as Congress intensifies scrutiny of Epstein’s network. Lawmakers are set to vote Tuesday on further public disclosure of files tied to Epstein’s operations, associates, and potential political influence.
Summers’ announcement marks one of the highest-profile fallout moments since the push for transparency over Epstein’s connections began earlier this year.
