New Delhi, October 20: While India’s telecom industry is showcasing rapid growth in 5G and moving towards creating a 6G ecosystem across the country with over 1.189 billion telecom subscribers and 825 million Internet subscribers, however challenges at the ground level is different as either the 5G network is not upgraded at many places especially rural India across the country or mobile users do not have the 5G handsets, owing to which large number of mobile users in India continue on 4G networks.
The 5G network rollout in India, according to Nokia, India’s achievement has been phenomenal and amongst the top three countries globally with the largest 5G installed base in the world. Nokia President and CEO Pekka Lundmark recently said this while addressing an event during the inauguration of its 6G research lab in Bengaluru. According to him, India has a largest 5G installed base, with 5G download speeds beating those found in many advanced markets.
With the introduction of 5G technology, the telecom industry is set to undergo even more significant transformations and opportunities for growth. 5G technology is the next-generation wireless communication standard that aims to connect gadgets, machines, businesses, and people with lightning-fast speeds, low latency, and expansive connectivity. Unlike its predecessor, it provides more flexibility and eliminates the need for specialized networks. This technology is already making waves in various industries, with applications ranging from IoT to autonomous vehicles.
In India, the adoption of 5G has been remarkable, with 10 million subscriptions reported in 2022. Experts predict that this number will reach 700 million by 2028, showcasing the immense potential of the technology. With its arrival, the telecom sector is poised for a dramatic evolution.
Looking beyond 5G, the Indian government has already introduced the Bharat 6G Vision document and testing platform to accelerate the development of 6G technology. This document aims to provide internet speeds that are thousands of times faster than 5G, revolutionizing connectivity further.
The upcoming generations of technologies are expected to enhance network management, support faster downloads, reduce energy consumption, and connect billions of devices. Analysts predict that the telecom market in India will reach a size of $69.62 billion by 2028, illustrating the exciting opportunities ahead.
