Trump Aid Musk Meets Iran Envoy in Secret Meeting to Defuse Tension, says NYT

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, November 15: Billionaire Elon Musk has met Iran’s envoy at the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani ahead of Donald Trump assuming presidency early next year in the US. The New York Times in a report quoted an anonymous Iranian source saying that Musk discussed ways to defuse tension with Iran in the meeting.

The US daily claimed that the meeting was “positive”. The report has come amid Trump picking up staunch Israel supporters Mike Waltz and Stephen Miller for key roles in his administration. Appointment of Waltz and Miller, subject to Congressional approval, was seen in the Middle East as signal to an unequivocal support for Israel in the ongoing offensives.

The US daily also claimed in the report that the meeting between Musk and Iravani lasted for about an hour. The meeting was held at a secret location on Monday, added the NYT, which quoted Iranian Mission at the UN offering “no comments” on the meeting.

“The meeting, if confirmed, could offer an early indication that Trump is serious about diplomacy with Iran,” said TRT World, adding that the US President-elect may not be “choosing the more hawkish approach favoured by many conservatives in his Republican Party as well as Israel”.

The meeting of Musk with Iravani has come amid war rhetoric in Israel. The newly appointed Defence Minister Israel Katz this week told reporters in Tel Aviv of high risk from nuclear facilities of Iran. Israeli television channels claimed that the Iranian nuclear facilities now face grave risks of attacks.

Israel describes Iran as an existential risk. Iran also patronises the so-called resistance force of the Hamas, the Hezbollah, and the Houthis.

The meeting of Musk with the Iranian official has come amid speculations that Trump will strike ‘deal’ with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine War. But Israel, per Middle East Experts, is an exceptional strategic partner of the US. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate all sources of threats to his country.

The US policy in dealing with Iran has seen several U-turns, spanning the terms of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Iran is rumoured to be on the verge of acquiring nuclear bomb as a beneficiary of Pakistan’s alleged trans-national proliferation during the last 1990s. The US sanctions on Iran could not stop Tehran from pursuing the nuclear objective as a deterrence against Israel.
