Trump picks up JD Vance as VP for sharp MAGA campaign

Former President Donald Trump has chosen Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2024 election. Trump made the announcement on social media just before accepting the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Vance, known for his book “Hillbilly Elegy,” has been a strong supporter of Trump’s policies and has frequently joined him on the campaign trail.

New Delhi, July 16: Former US president Donald Trump has picked up Ohio Senator James David Vance as his Vice President nominee. Trump made his maiden appearance in the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Monday evening with his right ear bandaged.

Trump got a rousing reception at the RNC. The audience gave him a standing ovation. The RNC sets in motion the official nominees of the Republicans for the November election.

The backdrop of the RNC was set by the assassination attempt two days ago on Trump. The US President, Joe Biden, went on air in prime-time to stress for cooling the political climate.

But the US-based commentators claim that Trump has no inclination at all of lowering his vitriolic. By choosing Vance as his running mate, Trump has indicated that he will stay the MAGA (Make America Great Again) course with more firepower.

“Some observers had hoped that Trump’s near-death experience might have softened him somehow. Maybe he would use this moment to bring us all together, they said. But since he selected as his VP someone like J.D. Vance — a hard-edged attack dog for a maximum MAGA agenda — I fear that everyone can kiss that fantasy goodbye,” Van Jones of CNN commented during a television discussion.

Simon Marks of the CAN said that Trump has picked Vance for being a “mini-me”. He stressed that Vance is an alter ego of Trump.

Vance is an ultra-conservative. He has been slammed by liberal democrats for his opinions on abortions.

Vance had been a sharp critic of Trump in the past. He had called Trump an idiot. But he claims to have changed his opinion about Trump.

“I was sceptical of Trump in 2016. But his presidency changed my mind, and also of the Americans,” Vance told Fox News after his nomination as the running mate of Trump. Vance had even called Trump “America’s Hitler”.

Bess Levin in an article for Vanity Fair had reasoned that there were more reasons for Trump to pick Vance as his VP candidate. She argued that Vance as is the case with Trump has not committed to accepting the November poll verdict.

In 2020, the Trump followers had attacked the Capitol Hills. Trump had refused to accept the verdict which elected Biden as the president of the US.

Ian Bremmer, a political commentator, opined in a long video post that the US election remains chaotic. He warned that the US may be the only nation which is facing risk of peaceful transition of power.
