Israel targets Iran’s Military Heads in Operation Rising Lion

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, June 17, 2025 – The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday the elimination of Major General Ali Shadmani, Iran’s newly appointed wartime Chief of Staff and the highest-ranking military commander, in a precision airstrike on a command center in central Tehran. The strike, part of Israel’s ongoing “Operation Rising Lion,” marks the second time in five days that the IDF has targeted Iran’s top military leader, escalating the intensifying conflict between the two nations.

Iran is yet to officially confirm Shadmani’s death. According to an IDF statement posted on X, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) conducted the overnight strike on a staffed headquarters of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command, Iran’s emergency military nerve center, following “precise intelligence” and a “sudden opportunity.” The IDF described Shadmani as Iran’s “senior-most military official” and the closest military advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, overseeing both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regular Iranian army.

“For the second time in 5 days—the IDF has eliminated Iran’s War-Time Chief of Staff, the regime’s top military commander,” the IDF stated, emphasizing that Shadmani’s role involved “direct influence” on Iran’s offensive plans against Israel. Shadmani was appointed to the position just four days ago after the death of his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Gholam Ali Rashid, in an earlier Israeli strike. Shadmani was reportedly instrumental in coordinating Iran’s military strategy, including operations involving Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other proxies in Iran’s “axis of resistance.”

Israel’s i24NEWS reported that the airstrike targeted a manned headquarters in central Tehran, with the IDF Intelligence Branch acting on actionable intelligence to seize a “rare opportunity” to eliminate Shadmani, who had assumed command of the Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters earlier this month. The report highlighted that the command center was responsible for managing Iran’s combat operations and approving fire plans against Israel.

Israeli operations have so far targeted Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure, including the elimination of IRGC Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salami, Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, and nuclear scientists. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz hailed the operation as a “striking achievement,” warning Tehran that “anyone working to annihilate Israel will be eliminated,” according to Ynetnews.

The assassination has sparked global concern, with Russia and China expressing “grave concern” and the US State Department calling for de-escalation.

The Israel-Iran conflict entered its fifth day on Tuesday. The G7 Leaders’ Summit in their draft joint statement said that Iran cannot acquire a nuclear weapon.
