New Delhi, February 23: The joint forum of residents of New Rajinder Nagar organised a meeting with Lok Sabha MP Bansuri Sawraj, MCD councilor Arti Chawla, and the newly elected MLA Umang Bajaj to issue a charter consisting of immediate priorities of the people. The residents handed over the charter consisting of 25 key concerns.

“I assure residents that their faith in the BJP and its policies will be nurtured in letter and spirit. Concerns of residents, including minor ones, will be dealt with all sincerity and seriousness,” said the BJP leaders.

The RWA called the BJP leaders for ‘The four Arms of Development’ organised by the joint forum of residents of New Rajinder Nagar. Arvind Mehta, president of the joint forum, explained the theme, saying: “This meeting is to abreast the elected leaders about our main issues and we have also handed over a charter of 25 issues to them and also a time frame of one year.”

The charter consisted of issues such as quality and availability of water, roads, and. Safety. He said that earlier the issues were not dealt with effectively because different party was in power in the civic body and the city government.

“Situation in New Rajinder Nagar has worsened. Water issue remains a concern. Sewage problem is also acute,” said Mehta. He added that “there are dark spots with no CCTV cameras while roads are in bad shapes”.

“If 24-hour water supply is not possible, at least twice a day availability must be ensured. For 11 years, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership did nothing willfully,” alleged Mehta. We approached them with these issues but nothing concrete came out of it, he said.

Bansuri Sawraj assured the residents that the elected representatives will, henceforth, work in unison to solve issues of the people. She thanked the residents for helping the BJP win the Assembly elections. “If any work does not fall under the jurisdiction of Chawla and Bajaj, I will surely look into the concern myself,” added Sawraj.

Sukh Sagar Sahni, a resident and a senior member of the forum, alleged that the former AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak had claimed that he would not work for the area development since the people had not voted for him.

“New Rajinder Nagar is a posh area, and we get dirty and smelly water or no water at all. Inder Puri gets water thrice a day,” said Sahni. He also alleged that illegal construction in the areas is a big concern.

Women raised incidents of chain snatching with the BJP leaders. The meeting was also attended by the Sindhu Samaj of Rajinder Nagar,  Market associations of Karol Bagh and New Rajinder Nagar.

The charter of 25 points also included demand for desealing the building floor at the Shankar Road market and also deseal basements. The charter also highlighted the issue of conversion of lease hold properties to the free hold.

Restoration of back lanes, better sewer lines, restoration of footpaths and roads, installing CCTVs at dark spots, shifting weekly Thursday market, end to encroachment done by street vendors are some of the issues listed in the charter.

Shashi Mehta, a resident, said “the roads last time were constructed during the tenure of Shiela Dikshit. After that the condition deteriorated from bad to worse. Sewers overflow while there is dirt on roads”.

Amit Chaudhry, another resident, said that “AAP just catered to vote bank in clusters or slums. We were never in the focus”.  Chaudhry adds. Umang Bajaj, youngest of the newly elected MLAs, promised to “work diligently to fulfil each and every promise my party made before and during the elections”.

Neeraj Gupta, a resident, listed the “issue of environment at the top”, arguing for “waste segregation, waste management, plastic free society, and rainwater harvesting”.
