Incessant rains triggered fresh technical failures on Delhi Metro’s Yellow and Blue lines, leaving passengers stranded at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, and Barakhamba Road amid overcrowding and safety concerns.

NEW DELHI, September 1, 2025 — Delhi Metro commuters faced another harrowing day on Monday as heavy rains disrupted services across key routes, causing long delays, overcrowding, and chaos at several central stations.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported its third technical snag in less than a week, this time hitting services on the Yellow and Blue lines. Services between Barakhamba Road and Indraprastha on the Blue Line were halted, while technical issues also stalled trains on the Yellow Line near Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest interchanges in the network.

Passengers took to social media to vent their frustration. Akhilesh Pandey wrote on X, “After fare hike, this is the ‘service’ Delhi Metro provides – passengers stranded for over 30 minutes, no announcements, platforms overcrowded and unsafe. Commuters deserve better.”

Another commuter, Himanshu Yadav, described chaos at Barakhamba Road station: “Been standing for the past 30 minutes, and now they are telling everyone to get down. Total havoc just after rains.”

At Mandi House, incessant rain led to delays and long queues, as confirmed by DD News. Similarly, Ajay Joe highlighted the rush at Gurgaon’s Sikanderpur interchange, worsened by flooding in surrounding areas.

The recurring snags come at a time when Delhi’s road traffic is already paralyzed by monsoon flooding, putting additional strain on public transport.

DMRC’s Response

In a statement, DMRC said that the disruptions were caused by waterlogging and technical faults triggered by heavy rainfall. Officials confirmed that emergency teams were deployed to restore services, and normal operations resumed after approximately one hour. “Passenger safety remains our highest priority. We regret the inconvenience caused and are working on preventive measures to avoid such issues in the future,” DMRC said.

However, commuters remain unconvinced, pointing to repeated breakdowns and inadequate crowd management. With over 5 million daily riders, Delhi Metro remains the city’s transport lifeline. But the spate of technical failures, coupled with inadequate rain preparedness, has sparked criticism over DMRC’s maintenance standards and crisis response.
