New Delhi, February 16: Delhi government has said that the city with addition of 350 new electric buses has become the first in the country and the third in the world with most e-buses plying on the roads. The city government has said that there are 1650 electric buses in Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said that the effort is to gradually replace all CNG buses with electric buses in the bus fleet of the city. Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot has said that the Kejriwal government has taken concrete steps against pollution by bringing electric buses.

Gahlot claimed that 1300 e-buses plying on Delhi’s streets will lead to reduction in 47,000 tons of carbon dioxide. He said that the goal is to include 80 per cent e-buses in bus fleet, and so far 22 per cent of the target has been achieved.

Gahlot also said that under ‘Mohalla Bus scheme’, some buses will be deployed on Delhi’s roads in the next 15-20 days. Gahlot said: “These e-buses will operate on different routes from Sukhdev Vihar, Rohini Sector-37 Depot-II, and Burari Bus Depot-I.”

With the deployment of an additional 350 new electric buses on the national capital’s roads, the tally of electric buses in Delhi has surged to 1650, added the city government in a media statement. It added that Santiago, the capital of Chile, is the second city globally with 2,000 e-buses.

All these are low-floor e-buses equipped with GPS, CCTV, panic buttons, and other facilities for passenger safety. On January 17, 2022, the first electric bus was deployed on Delhi’s roads. However, the process of including electric buses in Delhi’s bus fleet started on May 24, 2022. During that period, 150 electric buses were deployed on Delhi’s roads simultaneously.

Gahlot said that the electric buses have covered a distance of 5.8 crore kilometer so far, and the emission of 47,000 tons of carbon dioxide has been reduced in Delhi. If there were no electric buses, Delhi’s environment would have emitted 47,000 tons of carbon dioxide, he added.

Gahlot said: “Currently, there are 7582 buses in Delhi’s bus fleet. Earlier, there were never so many buses in Delhi’s bus fleet.” Gahlot said that Route 502 is quite a popular route, which runs from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Mehrauli. Similarly, there is a high demand for buses on Route 419 as well.
