DC Shootout: Trump Blames Biden's Afghan Airlift for 'Total Bedlam'

US President says Afghan suspect in Washington DC shootout entered during chaotic evacuation, calls the withdrawal a “terrible situation” and renews push for tighter border controls.

New Delhi, November 28, 2025 —US President Donald Trump sharply criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal, alleging that a recently identified suspect—an Afghan national—entered the United States during what he described as a chaotic and poorly managed airlift. He was speaking on the Washington DC shootout.

Citing confirmation from the Department of Homeland Security, Trump told reporters that the individual was flown into the country under the previous administration. “It was total bedlam,” Trump said, displaying what he described as a photograph of overcrowded aircraft used during the evacuation.

But Selina Wang, a journalist with ABC, posted on X to state that the Afghan suspect had been given an asylum in the US under the Trump presidency.

“The suspect in DC shooting was granted asylum under the Trump administration. During Senate hearing in September, FBI Director Patel pledged to investigate Afghan evacuees in the US and ‘go through databases’ to check for national security concerns,” she posted on X.

But the US President shifted the blame on the Biden administration for the DC shootout in which Sarah Beckstrom, one of the two National Guard who were shot died. “People were crammed onto the plane, standing on top of each other.”

Trump claimed that during the evacuation, priority was not given to vulnerable civilians but rather to those who were “toughest and most capable physically,” asserting that this allowed individuals with questionable backgrounds to enter the US.

He argued that the withdrawal should have been conducted from the Bagram Air Base, rather than through Kabul’s main airport, saying that doing so would have led to “a much different story.”

Referring to the Biden administration led by Joe Biden, Trump said the evacuation was an “atrocity” that, in his view, directly compromised US national security. “This reminds us that we have no greater priority than full control over who enters and remains in our country,” he said.

Trump went on to repeat long-standing claims about illegal immigration, alleging that many migrants arriving in the US come from prisons, mental institutions, or criminal networks in their home countries. “Their countries don’t want them,” he said, arguing that these governments deliberately “send them to Americans to take care of.”
