New Delhi, February 16: A day after the Supreme Court held that the electoral bond scheme is unconstitutional, the Congress alleged that all accounts of the party have been frozen. The Congress has alleged that the banks are not honouring cheques issued by the party.
The Congress leader Ajay Maken has said that the bank accounts of even Youth Congress are not being allowed transactions. He said that the party’s bank accounts have allegedly been frozen weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress president, Mallikarjuna Kharge, in a post on the social media platform X alleged that “intoxicated with power, the Modi government has frozen the accounts of the country’s largest opposition party – the Indian National Congress – just before the Lok Sabha elections”.
Kharge also alleged that the freezing of the bank accounts of the party is “a deep blow to democracy”. He alleged: “The unconstitutional money that the BJP has collected will be used in the elections, but the money we have collected through crowdfunding will be sealed.” He also stated that the incident affirms his claims that “there will be no elections in future”.
Kharge appealed to the judiciary to “save the multi-party system in this country and secure India’s democracy”. He said: “We will take to the streets and fight strongly against this injustice and dictatorship.”
The Congress general secretary (organization) K C Venugopal also alleged that “not just the Congress party’s accounts, but India’s democracy has been frozen. Barely a month before the 2024 elections, the Government chooses to stop the principal opposition party from carrying out ANY financial transactions – on totally flimsy grounds.”
Venugopal charged that ‘when one avenue to tilt the balance was struck down by the courts yesterday, the Government has chosen a new route now.” He linked the claims of the freezing of the bank accounts of the Congress to the Supreme Court yesterday holding the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional.
Incidentally, the petitioners in the Supreme Court had alleged that the BJP had been principal beneficiary of the electoral bond scheme as the party got more than 50 per cent of the funding since the launch of the initiative. They had also alleged that the scheme was an indirect way of corruption.
Venugopal in a post on X said: “The BJP has hoarded over Rs. 6500 crore through the illegal electoral bond scandal, which remain untouched – but the earnest donations of ordinary INC workers and supporters are frozen. We will fight this new assault on democracy tooth and nail, we are confident that justice will prevail.”
