Life A Continuum & No One Really Dies: Oscar Nominated David Lynch

By S Jha

New Delhi, January 17: Celebrated director David Lynch, 78, known for originality in filmmaking has died. His family announced that “the man and the artist, David Lynch,” has passed away.

The People in an obituary described the “legendary filmmaker as son of a forest research scientist, who spent much in his childhood outside, exploring. Those same mysterious Pacific Northwest woods would eventually inspire Twin Peaks”.

Lynch directed the 1990 TV series Twin Peaks. “The show spawned a 1992 feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, and a 2017 revival season,” added the People. He was nominated for Oscar awards on four occasions.

Under his craft, acclaimed films won applauds of viewers for The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive.

“Steven Soderbergh once said to me that directors are either synthesizers or originators. He considered himself a synthesizer. He said David Lynch was an originator,” Tatiana Siegel, executive editor of Variety, posted on X in her obituary to Lynch.

The filmmaker was also known for his ‘Lynchian’ style of filmmaking. “It may sound weird but his work was what I watched for comfort. Rewatched Twin Peaks at least four times over the last eight rotten years,” wrote Sarah Kendzior, a non-fiction writer, in her message on X.

The US space agency, NASA, recalled the famous words of Lynch – “Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole”. “In memory of David Lynch, we will continue to explore the otherworldly and the unknown. We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you. We will see you in our dreams,” added NASA in a post on X.

Lynch also deployed his creative art for powerful message for social behaviour changes. The New York City sanitation workers’ syndicate recalled his short video on littering which made huge impact on the people.

“In 1991, David Lynch showed the world the alienation and innate horror of a dirty street, directing this unforgettable anti-littering ad for the City of New York,” said NYC Sanitation in a message.

Rolling Stone described the acclaimed director “the singular American filmmaker and multi-disciplinary artist who conjured dreams and nightmares of unsettling beauty and psychic horror”.

Film critic Isaac Feldberg shared a well-known quote of Lynch in memory of the director. “I believe life is a continuum, and that no one really dies, they just drop their physical body, and we’ll all meet again, like the song says. It’s sad but it’s not devastating if you think like that… We’re all going to be fine at the end of the story.”.
