Citing National and Farmers’ Interests, Congress Appeals to Modi as Dhankhar’s Sudden Exit Sparks Speculation

NEW DELHI, July 21, 2025 — Amid high political drama over the “sudden” resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Congress has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and persuade the Rajya Sabha Chairman to reconsider his decision.

“The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable. I was with him, along with a number of other MPs, until around 5 PM today and spoke to him over the phone at 7:30 PM,” said Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary in charge of communications, in a post on X. Incidentally, Dhankar’s office had issued a media statement about his official visit to Rajasthan for July 23.

Ramesh said that while Dhankhar may need to prioritize his health, “clearly there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye.” He added, “This is not the time for speculation, though. Mr. Dhankhar took both the Government and the Opposition to task in equal measure. He had scheduled a Business Advisory Committee meeting for tomorrow at 1 PM.”

According to the Congress leader, Dhankhar was also expected to make “some major announcements related to the judiciary” on the following day. “We wish him good health but also urge him to reconsider his decision,” Ramesh stated.

He further appealed directly to the Prime Minister: “We also expect the Prime Minister to get Mr. Dhankhar to change his mind. This will be in the nation’s interest. The farming community, in particular, will be greatly relieved.”

Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President with immediate effect, citing health reasons. His resignation has triggered a firestorm of speculation in the corridors of power in New Delhi.

Dhankhar still had several months remaining in his term. A former Governor of West Bengal, he hails from Rajasthan and has a legal background.

Though his tenure saw the suspension of several Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha, the Congress is now urging Modi to convince him to withdraw his resignation — a notable reversal amid past tensions.

Dhankhar often made headlines for his sharp critiques of the judiciary and his defense of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during sessions of the Rajya Sabha. He had also openly praised Prime Minister Modi after the BJP secured its third consecutive mandate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
