Bhabesh Chandra Roy Killing Sparks Outrage with Calls for Action from Modi Govt

New Delhi, April 19, 2025: The Congress on Saturday condemned the brutal killing of Hindu leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy in Dinajpur, Bangladesh, calling it a “chilling reminder” of the growing insecurity faced by religious minorities in the country.
The unabated violence in Bangladesh against minority Hindus is fast becoming a test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Opposition is turning restive while the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the parental; body of Modi-led BJP, is also aghast at violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
In a sharply worded statement, the Congress party expressed deep concern over Roy’s “abduction, assault, and eventual murder”. “The brutal killing of Roy is part of a larger, deeply disturbing pattern of violence against Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh,” said Jairam Ramesh, the Congress communication department chief.
He also stated that “this is not an isolated incident. Over the past months, there have been repeated and deeply disturbing instances of attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh — from the desecration of temples to targeted attacks on homes and businesses”.
The Modi government is increasingly facing criticism from the Opposition over the violence against the Hindus in Bangladesh. The RSS at its annual meeting in Bengaluru had also adopted a resolution over Bangladesh violence against Hindus.
With Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government at helm in Bangladesh, the Islamic nation is widely facing condemnation for the rise of radical Islamists who have launched themselves on a rampaging bloodletting of the Hindus.
The Congress urged the government “to take up the issue with the highest urgency and press the Bangladesh to conduct a swift and transparent investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice”.
“Silence and inaction are not options when such targeted violence is allowed to take root,” the party warned, demanding that the “safety, dignity, and rights of minorities” in Bangladesh be upheld in both letter and spirit.
The hard-hitting statement of the Congress is also seen in political circles as an attack on the Modi government for its “current approach of patience and persuasion” with Bangladesh. “It’s evident that the government’s dovish approach with Bangladesh with hopes that there will be a Maldives like turnaround is not flawed but dangerous,” said a former diplomat, not wishing to be identified.
The Congress party reiterated its commitment to the principles of “secularism, justice, and human rights”, and expressed “solidarity with the Hindu community in Bangladesh”, as well as all others who are victims of religious persecution.
Violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh has drawn increasing international concern in recent years. Though the country’s Constitution promises secularism and equal rights for all citizens, incidents of communal violence have surged, especially around religious festivals or during politically volatile periods.
In October 2021, anti-Hindu riots erupted following rumours of alleged desecration of the Quran during the Durga Puja celebrations in Cumilla, triggering widespread attacks on Hindu temples, homes, and businesses across several districts. The violence left multiple people dead and many injured, including members of law enforcement.
Reports from rights organizations and community groups continue to highlight: Desecration of temples and idols; Land grabbing and forced displacement of Hindu families; Kidnapping and forced conversions of women from minority communities; Political intimidation and lack of legal recourse for victims.
