New Delhi, April 8: In a first meeting in 60 years in Gujarat, the Congress sought to wrest the legacy of ‘Sardar’ Vallabhbhai Patel from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Congress passed a resolution to fight the BJP with slogan of “Our Sardar”.
Digging out historical records, the Congress resolution highlighted Patel’s “close association and bonding with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru”. The Congress claimed that the resolution “debunked BJP’s propaganda about the relationship between the two”.
The BJP berates the Congress by lamenting that Nehru ignored advises of Patel on Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP also lampoons the Congress by targeting Nehru often for all the ills faced by the nation.
The Congress called the resolution ‘Nyaypath’, saying that this aims “protection of Constitution and democracy”. “The Congress today ripped apart the BJP’s attempts to hijack the legacy of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The meeting of the Extended Congress Working Committee today passed a resolution, ‘Flag Bearer of Freedom Movement-Our ‘Sardar’ – Sh. Vallabhbhai Patel’,” said the Congress party in a media statement.
The Congress shed limelight on Patel’s legacy in the empowerment of farmers to attack the BJP. “The BJP is undermining his legacy, whether muzzling the voice of farmers or creating the divide on regional, lingual and communal lines,” said the Congress in its media statement.
The resolution said, “Sardar Patel launched the ‘Bardoli Satyagrah’ in the year 1928 against the cruel and illegitimate levy on farmers by the Britishers”.

It further stated that “the BJP government of today emulates the cruel British Policies against the farmers – be it bringing an ordinance to whittle down ‘the Right to Fair Compensation Law’ for acquisition of land, the three Anti-Agriculture ‘Black Laws’ to enslave the farmers, blocking the path of farmers by digging up roads and putting up spikes and wedges, betrayal of the farmers by reneging on the solemn promise of an MSP guarantee law or crushing the farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri under the Jeeps of BJP leaders as a revenge for demanding justice”.
The Congress resolution cited letters written by Patel to Nehru to make a case against communal politics. “A similar violent ideology attacked both Sardar Patel and Pandit Nehru and even gave a call for their ‘public hanging’ as described by none less than Sardar Patel himself in his letter dated 8 February, 1948 addressed to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee,” stated the Congress resolution.
It further stated that “today, the ideology of violence and communalism is pushing the country into an abyss of hatred, based on the divisions of religious polarisation”.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Pritviraj Chavan said that the resolution passed by the CWC will pave way for the rejuvenation of the party.
