Supriya Shrinate terms advisory ironic, questions silence of Indian government; says foreign policy under Modi has led to repeated global embarrassments

NEW DELHI, June 24, 2025 – The Congress party on Tuesday sharply criticized the United States government over its recent travel advisory cautioning American citizens, particularly women, against traveling to India. At a press conference held at the AICC headquarters, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate condemned the advisory and took strong exception to the government’s “deafening silence” on the issue.

Shrinate, who heads the Congress party’s digital and social media platforms, demanded that the Government of India raise the matter urgently with the US administration. “It is shocking that a nation like India—the fourth-largest economy (India is currently fifth largest economy) and the land of Mahatma Gandhi—is being subject to such warnings, while a country like Pakistan, known for harbouring terrorists, receives a red-carpet welcome,” she said.

Calling it another “diplomatic failure” of the Modi government, Shrinate lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for investing heavily in personal diplomacy, only to see India’s global image suffer. “After organizing shows like Howdy Modi, Namaste Trump, and publicly endorsing Abki Baar Trump Sarkar, the Modi government has little to show for its efforts. Instead, we are faced with repeated insults,” she added.

Shrinate said it was ironic that Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, was being feted in foreign capitals, while India was being subjected to travel advisories that could harm its tourism sector, investor confidence, and global reputation.

PM Modi’s Name ‘Hyphenated’ with Pakistan’s Military Chief

Expressing outrage over reports that US President Donald Trump had mentioned PM Modi and General Munir in the same breath during recent remarks, Shrinate said, “It is unacceptable that the Prime Minister of India is being equated with a military commander who shelters terrorists. This reflects the failure of India’s foreign policy under Modi.”

She added that India had never before suffered such setbacks diplomatically, citing incidents where Trump had threatened tariffs, claimed to mediate in India’s internal affairs, and deported Indian nationals in inhuman conditions.

The Congress leader warned that the travel advisory could have long-term negative consequences. “This advisory will damage India’s image globally and adversely affect sectors like tourism and foreign investment. The government must respond firmly,” she said.

While condemning the US advisory, Shrinate also acknowledged that safety and security of women in India remain serious concerns. “The fact that 45 crimes are reported against women every hour in India is deeply disturbing,” she said, pointing to multiple instances where BJP leaders allegedly shielded perpetrators of heinous crimes.

“The bitter truth is that the Modi government has failed to ensure justice for half of India’s population and has equally failed to protect the country’s interests abroad,” she added. The Congress party has demanded a formal diplomatic response from the Indian government and called for accountability on both international relations and domestic security.
