NEW DELHI, August 2, 2025 — In a forceful reaffirmation of its ideological foundation, the Indian National Congress declared its unwavering commitment to defend the Constitution of India, calling it the “moral foundation” of the Republic and accusing the ruling BJP-RSS of attempting an ideological coup to dismantle its democratic soul.
The party’s statement came during a high-powered National Conclave on Law, RTI, and Human Rights, chaired by Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who warned of a sustained assault on the constitutional values of Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.
“We are living through a moment in which the Constitution is not merely ignored, it is being twisted. Its soul stands tested, tarnished and threatened,” Singhvi said. He also alleged that the “Constitution had checks and balances. They are being replaced by cheques and bulldozers. This is not governance. It is gaslighting of a Republic.”
The Congress party, in its official statement, traced the roots of the Constitution to the freedom movement, emphasizing its origins in the Nehru Report of 1928, the 1934 demand for a Constituent Assembly, and the leadership of Gandhi, Nehru, and Ambedkar. “Even before Independence, the Congress imagined a Constitution by Indians, for Indians,” the statement read.
Congress accused the BJP-RSS of undermining the very ideals they once opposed. “Their ideological forebears glorified Manusmriti, rejected the tricolour, and opposed the idea of a secular, inclusive Republic. Now, in power, they criminalise dissent, target minorities, and betray Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and workers,” the statement alleged.
Singhvi described the current state of affairs as “not a temporary deviation, but an ideological design.” He added that “democracy dies not only when tanks roll out, but when constitutional functionaries become partisan puppets.”
“Rights are not meant to be read, but to be realised,” asserted the Congress leader. He called upon legal professionals to rise to the occasion, urging: “We must reclaim Parliament. The Constitution cannot remain the concern of lawyers and academics alone. It must become the language of the people.”
In a poignant remark, he said: “The Constitution must not become just a government-issued book.” Congress leaders used the platform to remind the public of the party’s legacy in expanding rights, upholding dignity, and institution-building.
Muhammad Ali Khan, AICC National Secretary, recounted how a meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Jairam Ramesh had led to the introduction of the retrospective Section 24(2) in the Land Acquisition Law, offering justice to displaced communities. “That was Rahul Gandhi’s brainchild,” he said.
He further praised human rights lawyers aligned with the Congress, calling them “the bricks standing between lawlessness and the Opposition.”
