Ashok Tanwar joins Congress before polling in Haryana

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, October 4: The Congress showcased the return of former Lok Sabha MP Ashok Tanwar in the party fold. The Congress hopes that those who left the party in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections will take cues from Tanwar and return to the party fold.

The Congress treasurer Ajay Maken held a press conference along with Tanwar at the party headquarters on Akbar Road in the national capital. Tanwar had quit the Congress. He had first joined the Aam Aadmi Party before seeking his luck in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Tanwar had represented Sirsa Lok Sabha seat in the past. He had sought to build an image of a Dalit leader in Haryana. But he was seen at loggerheads with the former chief minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

“The BJP does not have any faith in the Constitution or Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” said Tanwar while addressing a presser in New Delhi on Friday. He expressed faith in “Rahul Gandhi’s mission to save the Constitution”.

Tanwar had joined the Congress yesterday, at Mahendragarh in presence of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

Tanwar was not the sole youth leader who had quit the Congress. A long list of the Congress youth leaders, including Milind Deora in Maharashtra, had quit the Congress. They had also spoken of disillusionment with the leadership of Gandhi.

Welcoming him back into the Congress, Maken said, Tanwar’s joining the party will further strengthen the fight initiated by Gandhi to save the Constitution and take forward the ideals of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

“Given his rich experience, having been the Indian Youth Congress president and also the Haryana Pradesh Congress president, party will emerge stronger,” said Maken.

Gaourav Ballabh, the television face of the Congress, had also quit the Congress to join the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The Punjab unit BJP president Sunil Jakhar also has a Congress pedigree.

Uttar Pradesh minister Jitin Prasada had also quit the Congress to join the BJP ahead of the state Assembly elections. The Congress now hopes to win back the leadership that the party had lost to the BJP in the recent years.

“I had joined the BJP just a few months ago but had realised and found that the desired faith in the Constitution and the teachings of Dr Ambedkar was lacking there,” said Tanwar.

He said, in contrast to that, Gandhi had launched a nationwide campaign to propagate the ideals and teachings of Dr Ambedkar and also to save the Constitution and reservations.

Replying to a question, Tanwar said he had realised the importance and strength of the Congress, while remaining outside it. He assured that he will always remain with the party, now that he had already seen the reality of other political parties.

He appealed to the people of Haryana that for the progress of everyone, they must vote for the Congress, as it was the only party that takes everyone along and respects everyone.
