Special Parliament Session on Emergency, Not Pahalgam Terror Attack: Congress

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, May 29, 2025 – The Congress is girding up to wrestle Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on the mat of the Pahalgam terror attack. Attacking the government, the Congress on Thursday accused the Centre of planning a special session of parliament on 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency even while the Opposition is seeking an urgent sitting of both the houses to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack.

“It appears that a special session of Parliament is being considered for June 25-26 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency,” said Jairam Ramesh, the communication department chief of the Congress on Thursday.

He stated that “from the night of April 22nd itself, the Indian National Congress has been calling for an all-party meeting on the Pahalgam terror attacks and their fallout – to be chaired the PM himself. That has yet to take place.”

“On May 10th, both the LoP in the Lok Sabha and the LoP in the Rajya Sabha wrote to the PM requesting for a special session of Parliament to be convened and to demonstrate the nation’s collective resolve through a resolution. The PM has NOT accepted that suggestion as well,” added Ramesh.

Ramesh stated that “this will be yet another classic exercise in diversion and distraction from real and more urgent issues by the PM”. The Congress leader alleged that the Prime Minister “has placed the nation under an undeclared Emergency for 11 years”.

“… and the man (Modi) who refuses to answer why the Pahalgam terrorists are still absconding, why he allowed President Trump to broker a ceasefire, and why he gave a clean chit to China publicly on June 19th, 2020,” said Ramesh.

The Congress struck an aggressive posture even while the party is facing a challenge within with its Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor leading an all-party delegation to build a case against Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism. Tharoor has claimed that Modi proved him wrong in an interview yesterday to praise the Prime Minister.

The Congress in contrast has struck an aggressive posture, accusing the Modi government of indulging in a “PR exercise” in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. The Congress is aiming to portray Modi for weak leadership who “crumbled under the pressure of Trump”.
