New Delhi, January 15: Congress parliamentary party chief Sonia Gandhi on Monday morning inaugurated the 9A Kotla Road office of the Congress. The five-floor building is almost a walkthrough history of India with photographs on walls telling the journey of the grand old party.
“Indira Bhawan” has been built on the foundation of Democracy, Nationalism, Secularism, Inclusive Development and Social Justice.
“Symbolising the 140-year-old glorious history of the Indian National Congress, the walls here narrate the great saga of truth, non-violence, sacrifice, struggle and patriotism,” said Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge on the occasion.
The five ideals are embossed on the front wall of the building. The Congress headquarters took years for completion. The entry of the headquarters opens from the Kotla Road even while the building is at a stone’s throw from the sprawling building complex of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg (DDU).
Congress Goes Soul Searching in Belagavi to Gain Ambedkar Ace
“In this building, you will see the depth of talent; you will see how deeply the Congress party has impacted the soul of India. There is a rich history here; in fact, we often forget that understanding our identity is crucial,” leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said in his address.
He stated that one can “Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, along with countless workers, chief ministers, governors, defence ministers, and foreign ministers”.
Late PV Narsimha Rao has also found a place of spotlight on the wall of the new building of the Congress. In an almost five-minute-long commentary on the building, the Congress hailed Rao for “unlocking India’s potentials by unleashing reforms”.
The Congress in the past had faced brickbats for not giving a rightful recognition to Rao. Much of the spotlight in the new building remains on the members of the Gandhi family, from Jawaharlal Nehru to Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress has also given spotlight on party workers by showcasing profiles of party workers. Sant Ram, a party worker, thus, finds a place of spotlight with his photograph on one of the walls of the new building.
The Congress has walked into the new headquarters with Belagavi spirit with which the party is seeking a renewal this year. The centenary commemoration of the Congress convention at Belagavi resolved to dedicate the year for the expansion of the party base.
While the BJP and the Congress now have walked into new offices, they continue to occupy their old addresses at 16, Ashoka Road and 24, Akbar Road respectively. The political parties per Supreme Courter were asked to vacate bungalows from Lutyens’ Zone.
