BJP, Congress Clash Over Response to Pahalgam Terror Attack

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, April 30, 2025 — A political war of words has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress facing backlash over ‘Gayab’ caricature reminded the BJP of the response of the party in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh reminded Narendra Modi, then Gujarat Chief Minister, going to Mumbai and speaking to the media.

The Opposition accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being “missing in action” and the BJP hitting back with allegations of politicizing national security.

The Congress launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister, with party leaders accusing him of not attending the all-party meeting held on April 24. The party also described the Prime Minister as “Gayab” (missing), raising questions over his absence during a moment of national crisis.

Ramesh, in a strongly worded statement, emphasized the need for national unity while also expressing disappointment with the Centre’s response. “This is a time for unity and solidarity. A time for demonstrating a collective resolve to teach Pakistan a lesson it will never forget,” Ramesh said.

He added that the Congress had demanded an all-party meeting on the night of April 22 itself, immediately after the attack, and criticized the Prime Minister for not attending the session when it was finally convened.

Ramesh highlighted that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolution on April 24 clearly reflected the party’s firm stance against terrorism.

In addition, the Congress and other opposition parties have called for a special session of Parliament to discuss national security and formulate a united strategy against cross-border terrorism.

Drawing a comparison with the past, Ramesh also recalled the events following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, slamming the BJP for “grandstanding”.

“What did the BJP do on November 28, 2008 — just two days after the deadly terror attacks began in Mumbai? The-then Gujarat Chief Minister flew to Mumbai and addressed the media in an act of political opportunism. That same day, the BJP issued an awful newspaper ad,” he said.

The BJP, meanwhile, has accused the Congress of playing politics over national security and attempting to divide the country during a time of mourning. Party spokespersons defended the Prime Minister’s role and said that government agencies and security forces are actively engaged in assessing the situation and planning a response.
