New Delhi, March 15: The Congress on Saturday decried the arrest of party spokesperson Reetam Singh in Assam allegedly for a social media post. The Congress called the arrest “worse than atrocious”.
“The arrest of my young colleague Reetam Singh for a perfectly reasonable social media post is worse than atrocious Mr. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” posted Jairam Ramesh, the Congress communication department chief.
Deccan Chronicle in a report from Guwahati said that the “Assam police arrested Reetam Singh, an advocate, on charges of alleged social media post against Lakhimpur BJP MLA Manab Deka”. “A team from Lakhimpur police took Reetam Singh into custody. Earlier Singh in his social media post alleged that Assam police personnel were threatening force and entry,” added the daily. It added that Singh demanded to see the notice or search warrant under Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS).
“The arrest of Reetam Singh over a rightful social media post is nothing but a blatant attack on free speech,” said Manickam Tagore, the Congress MP in the Lok Sabha, in a post on X.
Deccan Chronicle in its report also stated that “the complaint against Reetam Singh was filed by MLA Manab Deka’s wife. She alleged that Singh is a habitual offender. She cited his previous arrests in Panbazar Police Station Case No. 93/2024 under Sections 505(1)(b), 171G, and 153(A) of the IPC, read with Section 66 of the IT Act, 2000, as well as Dispur Police Station Case No. 1091/2024 under similar charges.”
Reetam Singh in his post had uploaded a television channel report on punishment to three accused of serious crimes. In the post for which he was arrested, Reetam Singh accused the BJP MLAs of serious crimes.
