Congress top brass brainstorms strategy for Jharkhand elections

New Delhi, June 24: The Congress top brass on Monday went into a huddle to prepare for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections. The Congress president, Mallikarjuna Kharge, took stock of the poll preparations in Jharkhand.

Preparations for the Assembly elections to in Jharkhand slated for the end of the year have begun from the side of political parties. Kharge held a meeting with state in-charge Ghulam Ahmed Mir and Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur.

The Congress ministers in the Champai Soren-led Jharkhand Cabinet and other senior leaders also attended the meeting. Former president of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, was also present during the meeting.

“The party’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections and the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections were discussed in the meeting,” sources said.

The party leaders also said that measures to fight the elections with better coordination under the alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) were also discussed.

It was also learnt that Gandhi stressed on strengthening the party organization at the grassroots levels in Jharkhand. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress was successful in winning two Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress is more enthused for the fact that the party was able to win the two tribal reserved seats. The Congress leaders claim that the party has been able to rediscover the connect with the scheduled tribes’ electorate in Jharkhand.

“In the meeting, it was discussed in detail how to increase the support base on non-reserved seats as well. In the meeting, the strategy to win as many seats as possible in the upcoming Assembly elections was also discussed,” sources said.

Kharge is learnt to have told the state Congress leaders that the party is fully dedicated to the protection of the rights of all sections of Jharkhand. “Kharge lent his support to protecting the concerns of the people about water, forest, land, and tribal,” sources added.

It may be noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won all the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general elections. But the BJP could win only eight Lok sabha seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“The BJP has insulted the identity of Jharkhand by doing conspiracy politics. For the coming elections, all Congress workers will have to stay put among the people,” added the sources.

The BJP vote share in Jharkhand also went down by more than eight per cent. The JMM-led alliance, the Indian National Developmental and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), saw its vote share rising by more than four per cent in the Lok Sabha elections.
