New Delhi, February 19: Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge on Wednesday presided over a meeting of key functionaries of the party to brainstorm the roadmap ahead amid Delhi election verdicts. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi spoke at length on his strategy for the party in the immediate future.
The Congress national general secretaries and in-charges for the states attended the meeting. This was also the first meeting after Kharge carried out a rejig in his team of the national office bearers.
“This was the first meeting of the national office bearers and also leaders helming affairs of the states for the party. So, it was important to spell out tasks for the new persons in the team,” said a senior Congress functionary.
It has been reliably learnt that the Congress discussed the near-term political strategy in the backdrop of the Delhi elections. The Congress will focus now on the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

“The Congress as part of a strategy will focus on seats where the party has reasonable chances of winning elections. In place of spreading energy on maximum seats, the focus henceforth will be on intense electioneering on constituencies where the party can convert efforts into victories,” said the Congress functionary.
The Congress in the Delhi Assembly elections had focussed on a dozen constituencies. The party could not open its account in Delhi. Yet, the Congress drew positive messages from the Delhi elections.
“We not only defended our vote share but also improved. We saw crowd coming spontaneously to listen to our leaders. These are signs of efforts paying results,” said another senior Congress functionary.
It has also been reliably learnt that the Congress will bargain hard with alliance partners for seats where the party foresees reasonable chances of winning elections. “We may contest on 50-60 Assembly seats in Bihar where the Congress has strong base. We are not going to ask for too many seats from the alliance partners,” said the Congress functionary.
Bihar Assembly elections will be held in October this year. The Congress will be contesting the state polls in an alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Gandhi has visited Bihar twice in recent past few weeks. He is holding meetings with a select audience with aims to carve out a new support base for the Congress in Bihar.
