Congress Raps Modi for Defending Shah on Ambedkar Remarks

New Delhi, December 18: Congress president and leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should dismiss Union Home Minister Amit Shah by midnight if he truly respects B.R. Ambedkar.
Kharge condemned Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar as highly offensive. “Shah must be sacked immediately,” said Kharge.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters alongside senior party leaders, Kharge stated that Shah should resign immediately, failing which the Prime Minister should drop him from the cabinet for his derogatory and disrespectful comments about Ambedkar.

Kharge criticised Modi for defending Shah, saying: “Instead of condemning Shah’s remarks, the Prime Minister has chosen to shield him, exposing his government’s hypocrisy regarding the Constitution and Ambedkar’s legacy.”
He added that “Shah has no right to remain a minister as he had insulted the Constitution”. “If Modi has any genuine respect for Ambedkar, he must dismiss Shah by midnight today. Otherwise, all his talk about honouring the Constitution will appear as nothing more than hollow rhetoric,” claimed Kharge.
The Congress president referred to Shah’s remarks during the Parliamentary debate on Constitution, where he told Opposition members, “The number of times you invoke Baba Saheb’s name, you would attain heaven for seven births if you recited God’s name in the same measure.” Kharge called these remarks “deeply insulting to Ambedkar and reflective of the BJP-RSS mindset, which is guided by Manusmriti”.

He stated, “The Constitution does not talk about ‘swarag’ (heaven) or ‘narak’ (hell) — concepts rooted in Manusmriti, a book that holds ideological significance for the BJP and RSS.”
Kharge further emphasized that Ambedkar belongs to the entire nation and every individual whose rights have been secured by the Constitution. He stated that “Shah’s comments stem from the same ideology that opposed the Constitution when it was adopted”.
During an informal interaction with reporters outside parliament, Kharge warned that “Shah’s remarks have the potential to incite anger across the nation”.
In the press conference, Kharge was accompanied by senior Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Digvijaya Singh, Pramod Tiwari, Gaurav Gogoi, and others.
