Mukesh Ambani’s Retail Arm Brings Back Banned Chinese App

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, February 7: While the banned Chinese fashion retailer Shein has made quite re-entry in India, computers are warning that it may steal personal data such as passwords et al. Protected computers are blocking access to Shein fashion app which has silently brought back by Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Retail.

‘Shein Indian Fast Fashion’ mobile App is now available in India. The play stores are showing up the Chinese low-cost retailer for downloads.

Google Play store describes that the Chinese App is launched by Reliance Retail, which is owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. The government had banned this Chinese App five years ago.

India & China Hold Border SR Level Talk Amid ‘Sincerity’ Buzz

Isha Ambani, daughter of the Indian billionaire, is helming the fashion arms of Reliance Retail. The Shein App was banned five years ago on grounds of data protection norm violations.

Computers warn that “Shein.in may steal personal data, including credit card details and passwords”.

The quiet re-entry of the Chinese mobile App through Ambani-owned network has come within days of the visit of India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri to Beijing. China had rolled out red-carpet for Misri.

As an outcome of Misri’s China visit, India agreed to allow direct flight between the two nations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also had met Misri.

The quiet re-entry of Shein mobile App has invited curious commentary from Financial Times, a UK-based business daily. It wondered why the Ambani-owned network allowed the previously banned Chinese App.

However, it’s not immediately known if India lifted the ban on Chinese mobile Apps. India had banned a number of Chinese mobile App, including video-sharing platform TikTok.

“After nesting inside the Ajio app (owned by Ambani’s Reliance) for a couple of months, Reliance Retail has quietly launched it as a standalone app earlier this week,” said FT in a report on Friday. It also mentioned that a deal had been signed between Shein and Reliance Retail in May 2023.

The UK-based daily, quoted India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, saying: “Shein’s products were never banned in India — only the app was.” But it’s not immediately known when did the government lift the ban on the Chinese fashion retailer’s mobile App.

The Chinese startup DeepSeek is also available in India while access to AI App is being blocked in South Korea, Italy, France, and other nations.

FT stated in the report that the users’ data of the Shein App will now be hosted on Indian infrastructure. The data will also be stored in India, added the UK-based business daily.

China observers see India-China tension subsiding

India had recently enacted a personal data protection legislation. But the quiet re-entry of a low-cost fashion retailer through Ambani network is raising curious eyebrows in the diplomatic circles.

Some of former diplomats and retired military personnel have warned against hasty normalization of ties with China. India had spurned all requests of China to normalize ties previously in context of border tension.
