Chitrakoot with Ram’s Sacred Footprints Blossoms with Growth

Chitrakoot, April 18, 2025: Once synonymous with the fearsome echoes of banditry, the holy land of Chitrakoot is now reverberating with the sounds of development and devotion. After Ayodhya and Kashi, Chitrakoot is fast emerging as India’s next prominent spiritual and cultural destination.

Deeply intertwined with the life of Lord Shri Ram, Chitrakoot is where the Lord, along with Sita and Lakshman, spent a significant part of his exile. Immortalized in the verses of Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, the serene forests and tranquil rivers of Chitrakoot witnessed Bharat’s legendary meeting with Ram—an event steeped in fraternal devotion and moral resolve. It was also here that Shri Ram connected with the Kol and Kirat communities, spreading a timeless message of social harmony and inclusion.

A New Chapter Begins

The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted the Chitrakoot Dham Teerth Vikas Parishad, a dedicated body aimed at the holistic development of this spiritual haven. With the approval of a ₹50 crore budget in the April 8 cabinet meeting, the state has signaled its commitment to bolstering tourism infrastructure, preserving heritage, and improving visitor amenities.

Among the highlights of this investment are:

  • ₹12 crore for upgrading tourist facilities across major pilgrimage points
  • ₹17.56 crore for a world-class Tourist Facility Centre at Devangana, near the upcoming airport
  • ₹20.45 crore for enhancing the Kamadgiri Parikrama Marg, a revered pilgrimage path
  • Beautification and restoration of sites like the Mandakini River, Tulsi Das’s birthplace in Rajapur, and Valmiki Ashram in Lalpur

First tranches of funding—ranging from ₹50 to ₹75 lakh—have already been released, signaling swift execution.

From Infamy to Illumination

For decades, Chitrakoot was plagued by the shadow of notorious bandit gangs—names like Dadua, Thokia, Radhe, and Gauri Yadav etched fear into the local psyche and even influenced electoral politics. “That chapter, however, has been firmly closed. Under Yogi Adityanath’s governance, law and order were restored, and a vision for a new Chitrakoot took root,” said the UP Information Department in a statement.

This shift is not only symbolic but structural. Connectivity is being radically transformed with major infrastructure projects such as the Chitrakoot Link Expressway, the Ram Van Gaman Marg, and the Satna Greenfield Highway. These roadways, along with the Bundelkhand Expressway and the region’s first airport, are integrating Chitrakoot into national and interstate networks, especially boosting access from Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s announcement of a four-lane greenfield expressway connecting Satna to Chitrakoot as part of the Bharatmala Project adds to this momentum.

Tourism on the Rise

The results are already visible. “Daily vehicle arrivals in Chitrakoot swelled from 2,500 to 7,000 during the Mahakumbh, peaking at 14,000 on weekends. The newly inaugurated ropeway, built under a public-private partnership, adds a modern attraction to the spiritual circuit,” added the state government.

Furthermore, reverse tourism during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh drew pilgrims to Chitrakoot, adding a new dimension to religious travel in India.

To cement its reputation, the government has organized events like the Ramayana Conclave, Ramayana Mela, and introduced attractions such as the Digital Ramayana Gallery and a Water Screen Laser Show—a ₹52 crore cultural investment that merges technology with tradition.

Beyond Pilgrimage: A Vision for Investment

“The Yogi government’s ambition extends beyond religious tourism. Chitrakoot is poised to become an economic magnet, as part of the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot Development Area, which includes six districts: Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Banda, Kaushambi, and Hamirpur,” added the state government.

Crucially, Chitrakoot is identified as one of six nodes in the UP Defence Corridor, opening doors for future industrial growth and employment.

“The Centre’s ₹11,000 crore investment in developing the Ram Van Gaman Marg from Ayodhya to Chitrakoot is another game-changer. The project, set for completion by 2026, will not only commemorate Shri Ram’s journey but also revive cultural touchstones like Shringverpur, where Ram’s meeting with Nishad Raj is immortalized in legend,” added the state government. A majestic statue now marks that historic moment of unity and humility.

The Treta Yug Spirit, Rekindled

From dense forests and spiritual tales to expressways and economic zones, Chitrakoot is undergoing a profound transformation—one that blends reverence with revival, memory with modernity.

“Chitrakoot is not just a place, it’s a feeling—a symbol of timeless values and divine presence,” CM Yogi Adityanath remarked during a recent event. “We are committed to restoring its sanctity and elevating it as a beacon of peace, prosperity, and spiritual pride.”

With its sacred soul intact and a new heart of infrastructure, Chitrakoot is once again radiating the peace, power, and promise it did in the Treta Yug—a land where divinity once walked, now surging ahead with devotion and development hand in hand.
