New Delhi, August 24: The BRICS in a unanimous statement called for expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). With China nodding, the statement called for the inclusion of India and others in the UNSC to truly reflect the world order.
The BRICS statement called for inclusion of one each member from Asia (India), Africa (South Africa) and Latin America (Brazil) in the expanded UNSC. The statement of the BRICS is significant because China has been seen to be the main opponent of the demands for the expansion of the UNSC.
The US and Russia and other members of the UNSC for years have been supporting the inclusion of India in the coveted body. Incidentally, India had declined the first offer made to become a part of the UNSC and New Delhi had in place argued the case of China to gain a space in the coveted club. The World War-II legacy United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has, however, ben seen to have played no role in resolving any of the conflicts in any parts of the world in the last few decades.
“We support a comprehensive reform of the UN, including its Security Council, with a view to making it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of developing countries in the Council’s memberships so that it can adequately respond to prevailing global challenges,” said the BRICS in its statement.
The group further stated that “we support the three legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including Brazil, India and South Africa, to play a greater role in international affairs, in particular in the United Nations, including its Security Council,” added the statement.
Strategic affairs noted that the statement of the BRICS on the expansion of the UNSC has come out to be most significant as it reflects revisionist approach by China and Russia. Also, the change in the stance of China has been most visible at BRICS, as Beijing is showing accommodative stance to resolve the regional hotspots with political cooperation, which is seen to be hints on tension with India. Also, Russia has become a pariah state for the western nations, while China is increasingly becoming isolated in the world order for throwing its weight behind Moscow.
