New Delhi, April 11, 2025: China has equated unilateral imposition of tariffs by the US to the ‘Law of Jungle’. China also said that the “US cannot act with impunity and the wheels of history cannot be turned back”.
Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi told Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency that there “should be a global response against the unilateralism of the US.
“The international community must not sit idly by as the US cannot act with impunity and the wheels of history must not be turned back,” Wang told Grossi.
His remarks came on a day when China slapped 125 per cent tariffs on the US. China also said that Beijing will ignore any additional counter tariffs by the US, for the American goods will not find buyers at such rates.
“The US recently has been wielding the tariff stick indiscriminately, blatantly placing its own interests above the common interests of other nations and openly disregarding the multilateral trade system and established international rules,” Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister told the DG of the IAEA.
Chinese belligerence over the tariffs also came amid a report by the CNN, claiming that the US has asked China for a phone call from President Xi Jinping to Donald Trump. A section of commentators in the US mocked at the report, saying that the Trump administration is now “begging for a phone call from Xi to Trump”.
“China is a responsible member of the international community. The country’s opposition to power politics is not only to safeguard its own legitimate rights and interests, but also to uphold the common interests of all nations and to prevent humanity from regressing into law of the jungle,” Wang was quoted having told Grossi by Xie Feng, the Chinese ambassador in the US.
The Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister also asserted that “amid the current resurgence of unilateralism and power politics, all nations need to take a clear stance”. “The international community must speak with one voice to uphold justice and truth and to counter falsehoods and coercion,” he added.
It may be recalled that Chinese Premier Li Qiang had also used the term ‘Law of Jungle” during his address at the ‘Two Sessions’ last month in Beijing.
Trump paused tariffs for all nations for a period of 90-day. But he made an exception for China for which cumulative tariffs by the US now stand at 145 per cent.
