China Hopeful to Negotiate Trade Disputes with EU Over EV Tariffs

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, October 30: China has dragged the European Union to the World Trade Organisation over the final probe over the electric vehicle subsidy. Chinese Ministry of Commerce claimed that the EU findings are “unreasonable”.

The EU imposed tariff to the extent of 35 per cent to the EV exported by China after the final probe outcome. China and the EU have been at loggerheads for over two years over the claims of Beijing dumping EV into the continent.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce of China while responding to reporters’ questions on the EU’s announcement of the final results of its anti-subsidy investigation against China’s electric vehicles said that the decisions are unfair.

Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi has held several rounds of discussions with the EU leaders to calm the frayed nerves over trade disputes. Chinese diplomats have been on a spree to reach out to influential leaders in the EU to buy peace over the trade dispute.

On October 29, the European Commission announced the final results of its anti-subsidy investigation into China’s electric vehicles exports. “We have noticed the announcement issued by the European side. China has repeatedly pointed out that the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation of electric vehicles in China contains many unreasonable and non-compliant aspects, and is a protectionist approach that is actually ‘unfair competition’ in the name of ‘fair competition’,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce in China.

He stated that “China does not agree with or accept the ruling and has filed a lawsuit under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism”. “China will continue to take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” added the Chinese spokesperson.

Th EU has been alleging that China is exporting overcapacity to the continent. Germany lately has been miffed with China for ‘unfair’ trade practices. The EU members allege that while China exports overcapacity, Beijing blocks imports and access to its markets by “unfair means”.

China is hopeful for negotiations with the EU to buy peace over the trade disputes. “At the same time, we have also noticed that the European side stated that it will continue to negotiate with China on price commitments. China has always advocated resolving trade disputes through dialogue and consultation, and has been making its best efforts to this end,” added the Chinese spokesperson.

China claimed that “the technical teams of both sides are conducting a new phase of consultations”. “We hope that the European side will work with China in a constructive manner, follow the principles of “pragmatism and balance”, take care of each other’s core concerns, reach a solution acceptable to both sides as soon as possible, and avoid trade friction escalates,” added the Chinese spokesperson.
