Chilean President on 1st India Visit Invites Modi to Antarctica

India and Chile Sign Agreements on Disaster Management, Cultural Exchange, and Antarctic Cooperation

New Delhi, April 1: Globe-trotting Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a new invite, to visit frigid Antarctica. Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font extended invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Antarctica.
In a joint press conference with Boric, the Prime Minister said that Chile is a gateway to Antarctica. Chile is in South America, overlooking the southernmost Antarctica continent. Chilean President held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister in his first India visit on Tuesday.
Boric invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Antarctica, acknowledging Chile’s strategic position as a gateway to the continent. Both sides signed an agreement to enhance collaboration in Antarctic exploration, reinforcing their commitment to scientific research and environmental preservation.
India currently has two active research bases in Antarctica – Maitri and Bharti. India undertakes active research works at the frigid continent.
In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, India and Chile today exchanged agreements for cooperation in Disaster Management and Cultural Exchange. Additionally, both sides signed Letters of Intent on Antarctic cooperation, further deepening their strategic collaboration.
The Prime Minister held comprehensive discussions with Chilean President in New Delhi, covering various aspects of India-Chile relations. Prime Minister hosted a lunch in honour of Boric, underscoring the growing partnership between the two nations.
In his press statement, Modi emphasized that Chile is a key partner for India in Latin America and serves as a gateway to Antarctica. The leaders identified new initiatives to enhance bilateral cooperation over the coming decade. Notably, discussions have commenced on a mutually beneficial Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Modi highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships in critical minerals and developing resilient supply and value chains. Both leaders also discussed leveraging agricultural capabilities to ensure food security.
Furthermore, Modi reaffirmed India’s willingness to share its expertise in digital public infrastructure, renewable energy, railways, space, and other sectors with Chile.
The leaders welcomed the growing cultural ties between the two nations. Modi expressed delight over Chile’s adoption of Yoga as a lifestyle practice and the declaration of November 4th as National Yoga Day in Chile. Discussions also focused on increasing cooperation in Ayurveda and traditional medicine.
Chilean President emphasized Chile’s aspirations to become a trusted partner for sustainable technology and innovation. He acknowledged the potential synergies with India in these areas, positioning Chile as a favourable destination for investment.
A major highlight of the discussions was the ‘Shoot in Chile’ program, which aims to bring India’s thriving audiovisual and Bollywood industry to Chile. Boric underlined the significance of this initiative, noting that Chile could serve as an attractive filming destination for Indian cinema.
