NEW DELHI, September 15, 2025 — Bihar’s engineering colleges are reeling under spates of caste violence. One student currently lies in critical conditions in an ICU. Another student sustained grievous injuries after he was attacked for his caste in a Bihar engineering college in Bhagalpur.

“Bihar’s engineering colleges are facing caste violence. Students attack fellow students for their castes during ragging. One of our students is in critical conditions,” Om Prakash Roy, principal of the Bihar Engineering College in Bhagalpur, told The Raisina Hills, while speaking on phone.

CCTV footages show a group of students wearing helmets and wielding sticks chasing a student. He sustained serious head injuries, besides knife attacks on body parts. The videos emerging out of the college campus in Bhagalpur show students in groups trooping into hostels and educational blocks to attack fellow students.

“Caste violence has been taking place for a long time. We have reached out to the district administration. We will be happy if the police are deployed on the campus,” added Roy.

He also stated that the college is probing the incidents of the caste violence for necessary actions. “We have identified the miscreants. On basis of the committee recommendations, we will decide on expelling the miscreant students from the college,” added Roy.

He also mentioned that “five students had recently been expelled from Bihar engineering college in Muzaffarpur for spearheading caste violence.”

Reports said that at least two police FIRs had been lodged by victims against a number of students in the Bhagalpur engineering college for assaults. “We are awaiting the police action on FIRs. On basis of the police actions, we will take necessary actions,” added Roy.

Some of the students who spoke to The Raisina Hills on condition of anonymity said that “caste gangs operate on the campus of the Bihar engineering college, and they assault students of other castes when they are found alone.” “If students don’t align with caste gangs, they become easy targets for attacks from the caste gangs. The faculty members remain mute spectators to incidents of attacks,” said a second-year student of the engineering college.

Roy, however, said that the college has so far not expelled any students who had been found in caste violence on the campus. “Caste violence is not just an issue affecting our college. Such incidents are taking at several places in Bihar,” said Roy.

Students also told The Raisina Hills that the engineering college in Bhagalpur often closes due to caste violence. “Education is disrupted as college shuts down after caste violence. The college administration remains a mute spectator to incidents of caste violence,” said another student.
