PATNA, September 24, 2025 — A week after the statewide furor over brutal assaults on two students in caste violence, Bihar College of Engineering (BCE) in Bhagalpur suspended 10 students for a year and decided for light punishment against 29 others.
The action came in the wake of murderous attack on a third-year student Ayush Kumar, who is currently battling for life. A day after a first-year student, Aditya Kumar, was also attacked by a group of students as a part of raging caste violence on the campus. He also sustained serious head injuries as the culprits rained lathis on his head. The college administration decided for inserting a black dot in records of 29 other culprits, who were also slapped with fines of ₹25000 and ₹10,000 respectively.
The college administration sought the security from the local police before releasing the order against the culprits. The police were deployed on the college campus last night. The police also carried out searches in hostels to recover lathis and helmets, which were being used in the caste violence.
All the 39 students have been barred from stay in hostels, stated the order issued by the college administration. The order also mentioned that any repeat violence by the named students in future will invite automatic rustication from the college.
“While the caste violence has been raging on the campus for years, this is the first occasion that an action of this sort has been taken against the culprits. The college administration had been timid in the past,” said a college student, requesting anonymity.
Earlier, Om Prakash Roy, principal of the college, while speaking to The Raisina Hills had sought to normalise caste violence on the campus, saying that “such incidents are taking in all parts of Bihar.”
College students also said that Janata Dal (United) MLA Gopal Mandal had posted a video on social media platform with students who had been named in the two FIRs. were registered. Students alleged that Mandal sought to influence the investigations in the two cases for which the college administration has taken punitive measures.
