New Delhi, January 6: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to exit the stage amid his sharp dip in popularity. Reports said that he is set to resign shortly.

Trudeau has been facing a major anger in Canada over sinking economy with housing crisis showing cascading effects on other sectors. Reports said that Trudeau will resign as early as this week.

The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday that Trudeau will resign before national caucus meeting on Wednesday. Trudeau will exit the centre stage of the Liberal Party ahead of the national elections in Canada.

The popular endorsement of Trudeau has taken a sever knock in the last on year. National popularity meter trackers in Canada peg Trudeau’s endorsement at just about 28 per cent. The national elections in Canada will be held in October this year.

The Canadian media reports said general explanations for the likely decision of Trudeau to resign. They speculated that Trudeau may resign even on Monday.

Besides housing crisis, Canada is battling a declining per-capita GDP and high inflation. Also, the US President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to slap higher tariff on Canada.

Trudeau had flown for a dinner meeting with Trump soon after the presidential elections. But Trudeau failed to acquiesce Trump. The US President-elect posted a pompous statement soon after the meeting with Trudeau, wondering if Canada should become the 51state of the US.

Trudeau became prime minister of Canada in 2015. His popularity began sinking with a sharp spike in inflation in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine War.

Also, Trudeau picked up quarrels with China and India in the last two years. Chinese President Xi Jinping had made his displeasure public with Trudeau during a brief chat on the sidelines of the Bali Summit of G20 two years ago. Xi had accused Trudeau of leaking conversations to the media.

The political crisis in Canada became imminent after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that she would resign in the backdrop of the struggling economy. Trudeau’s key ally Jagmeet Singh, who heads the New Democratic Party, also announced his plan to move a no-confidence motions against Trudeau in parliament.
