Canadian Deputy FM Names Amit Shah for Links to Targeting of Sikh Separatists

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, October 30: Canada’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison said yesterday that he was the source of the Washington Post report that claimed Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah was involved in targeting of Sikh separatists.

Morrison revealed that he was the source of the newspaper report during a parliamentary briefing in Canada on Tuesday. Until now, Canada had named only Sanjay Verma, the recalled high commissioner of India in Ottawa, for links to the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Shah’s name propped up briefly during the parliamentary briefing on Tuesday. Morrison told the parliamentary committee that he responded in an affirmative when the Washington Post asked “if Amit Shah was involved in targeting of the Sikh separatists”.

“The journalist called me and asked if it (Shah) was that person. I confirmed it was that person,” Reuters quoted Morrison telling the parliamentary committee.

India has trashed all charges of Canada on linking Indian officials in the violent targeting of Sikh separatists. India recalled its high commissioner while expelling top Canadian diplomats last week.

Verma in his interview to CTV News before leaving Ottawa had said that “we completely mistrust the whole the Justin Trudeau administration”. Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, had levelled a series of allegations against India over violent attacks on Sikh separatists. Union Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar this week said: “Frankly, for us, we really completely reject the manner in which the Canadian govt targeted High Commissioner and other diplomats.”

“There are small minority of people (in Canada). They have (been) made what appears to be a bigger political voice. The politics of that country is giving that political lobby a kind of value that is not just bad for us but for Canada also,” Jaishankar said during an interaction with students at a private varsity in Pune.

Jaishankar also said that India had long been warning against organised crime in Canada. “Many things happened in the last few years …the kind of people who have gone there and the activities that they indulged had negative impact,” said Jaishankar.

The External Affairs Minister also charged that Canada has been fostering a premising atmosphere for long time. “We would certainly hope more sensible sober thinking asserts,” added Jaishankar.
