Modi govt turns focus on ‘Purvodaya’ states

New Delhi, August 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is turning a sharp focus on four eastern states. Clubbed under the theme of ‘Purvodaya (rise of the east)’, the four states were at the centre stage of a key meeting called by the Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba.

The ‘Purvodaya’ theme of the government seeks an accelerated developmental focus on Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. “All ministries have been instructed to speed up the Budget announcements for ‘Purvodaya’. In the meeting chaired by Gauba, secretaries of all ministries were asked to expedite executions of schemes and proposals announced in the Budget for the four states in a timely manner,” said an informed source.

The Cabinet Secretary is learnt to have asked for reports from the ministries on actions taken by them for implementing the Budget announcements. “Gauba showed disappointment with a few officials for lack of progress on some of the Budget announcements for the states under the ‘Purvodaya’,” said a senior official in the government.

The government aims to bridge the development gap between the western and the eastern parts of the country. “The Cabinet Secretary directed the officials to implement Budget proposals in a time-bound manner. All the schemes announced in the budget under the Purvodaya scheme were reviewed in the meeting,” added the official.

The Centre is laying special emphasis on execution of projects under infrastructure development, construction of rail, road, electricity, bridges, airports, and expressways. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is showing special interest in the ‘Purvodaya’ initiative. This was apparent amid thrust for fast-paced exhortation for completion of the Budget announcements for the four states,” said the official.

With ‘Purvodaya’ initiative, the government claims to give a new thrust to infrastructure, employment, human resources and economic development opportunities in the four states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in power in Bihar and Odisha. The BJP aims to wrest power in Jharkhand and West Bengal.

“The Central Government believes that the Purvodaya states will be key for a self-reliant and developed India, and in achieving the goal of developed India by 2047,” added the official.

Incidentally, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is eying the states covered under ‘Purvodaya’ for future growth. The BJP is also eying to take pole position in the Bihar politics.
