Cabinet Secretary holds marathon meeting with secretaries on Budget 2024

New Delhi, August 22: Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Thursday held a marathon review meeting with secretaries of the ministries. Gauba took stock of the progress in implementing the Budget proposals.

The Cabinet Secretary took the meeting of the secretaries in virtual mode. The meeting lasted for about two and a half hours.

“The agenda of the meeting was the review of the progress on Budget proposals. The Cabinet Secretary took stock of the progress made by the ministries in implementing the Budget proposals so far,” said a senior official in the government.

Gauba is learnt to have expressed his displeasure at “no progress” in implementing the Budget announcement for setting up a new power plant in Bihar. “The Ministry of Power was pulled up for no progress on the Budget announcement to set up a 3400 MW power plant in Bihar,” said the official.

Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget proposals had announced setting up a power plant in Pirpainti in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. Sources said that the Ministry of Power has not even initiated any move to execute the announcement.

“The Cabinet Secretary has instructed that the power plant in Pirpainti be set up in a time-bound manner, and the necessary actions be initiated right away,” sources added.

The Cabinet Secretary, sources said, sought progress from the secretaries on each of the Budget announcement. “The message has been given that the review meetings will be held in quick successions to ensure that the Budget announcements begin rolling on the ground,” added the official.

The Cabinet Secretary also took a special interest in the implementation of the announcements for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. “The secretaries have been asked to give the progress reports on the Budget announcement, and also act speedily in fast execution of the budgetary proposals,” said the official.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandra Babu Naidu, is frequently visiting New Delhi to press for the central assistance in the development of the state. The Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, is also bargaining hard with the Centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre is dependent on the allies, the Janata Dal (United) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Both the NDA allies are learnt to be pressing for fast execution of the Budget proposals.
