New Delhi, September 10: Korean Director Bong Joon Ho is back with his sci-fi thriller that will screen in January next year. Warner Bros released trailer of ‘Mickey17’ in a week when the world was glued to the splash landing of SpaceX first private spacewalker Jared Isaacman.

Ho had earlier announced his arrival on the international stage with ‘Parasite’ in 2019. The film bagged him an Oscar Award.

Now, Ho is back to release ‘Mickey17’. The film is an adaptation of ‘Mickey7’ by Edward Ashton. The sci-fi novel adds to mankind’s curiosity about the outer space.

Robert Pattinson stars in the film as an “expendable” employee. He is called Mickey Barnes in the film.

“What’s it feel like to die? From director Bong Joon Ho, comes Mickey 17 – only in theatres January 31, 2025,” said Warner Bros while releasing the trailer of the much-awaited film.

“The Martian meets Dark Matter in Edward Ashton’s high concept science fiction thriller, in which Mickey7, an expendable, refuses to let his replacement clone Mickey8 take his place,” the description of the novel states. The description of the Ashton novel further gives the punchline: “Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.”

The book brief states that “Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim”. It adds that “whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous – even suicidal – the crew turns to Mickey”.

“After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal,” goes the description of the novel, saying “why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it”.

Spinning the thriller doses, the novel brings edge of the seat thrill, stating that “on a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties.”

Besides Pattinson, the star list in Ho’s sci-fi thriller includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

Ho in the Oscar winning ‘Parasite’ has awed the world cinema with his gripping tale of a debt-ridden South Korean family’s ordeals to escape the strongarm tactic of the bankers. His accounts of the working-class Korean family captured the upheavals caused by the impact of the fast-growing economy on the middle class.
