New Delhi, June 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bid to run a campaign against former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has earned the saffron outfit a criminal complaint. The Congress has vowed to hold people in the BJP accountable for the campaign against Gandhi.

“The BJP IT Cell sunk to new depths of desperation and dishonesty with their latest attack on the INC and Rahul Gandhi. The INC has filed a criminal complaint against all the individuals involved and it shall be pursued to the fullest extent of the law,” the Congress communication department chief Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Monday evening.

While Ramesh didn’t specify the specific incidents, the refrain appears to be the ‘Pappu panti’ campaign launched by the BJP from its official Twitter handle with tagline “inki Pappu panti jaati nahi (loosely translated to mean that the low-intellect of Rahul Gandhi doesn’t go away)”.

The BJP tweeted another ‘Pappu panti’ campaign on Monday, carrying a photograph of Gandhi with his purported statement that “Daliton ko upar uthane ke liye escape velocity jaisi takat chahiye (Escape velocity is needed for the upliftment of Dalits)”.

The BJP had also been tweeting short videos of the speeches of Gandhi with tagline “baaten aisi karon ki khud ko bhi samajh me naa aaye (speak such that even you do not understand)”.

“No matter how high or powerful they may think they are, we will make sure that they are held accountable for the lies they peddle,” Ramesh tweeted, while informing that a criminal complaint has been filed.

Within the political circle, it was being noted that the BJP is seeking to train its gun against Gandhi to make a case for ‘Modi versus Rahul’ template for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the lines of the 2019 general elections.

With Ramesh at the helm of the communication department of the Congress, the main Opposition party is seeking to blank out space for slanderous campaign against the party’s top leadership. Amit Malviya as the head of the IT department of the BJP is known to be leading the campaign against Gandhi.

The BJP unleashed the attack on Gandhi through ‘Pappu Panti’ tagline after losing the Karnataka Assembly elections. Gandhi has been unrelenting in his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi by linking him with the Adani Group. Gandhi lost his Lok Sabha membership after he was convicted by a Gujarat court for defamatory remarks against the people with Modi surname.
